Automated Electronic Defibrillator Project Go to Coffey Talk at http://www.whas11.com/community/Coffey-Talk--128263553.html for current info on our current AED project. Claudia Coffey, a reporter with WHAS11, has posted on her blog and you can get more information on her website at www.claudiacoffeyheartproject.org The South Oldham Lions Club in 2004 purchased 2 AEDs and donated one to the South Oldham High School and one to the South Oldham Middle School. Lion Joe Hardt was president at that time this project was initiated. He was instrumental in getting the AEDs purchased and installed at each school. Attached are photos of the AED and the plaque on the wall at each school.
Fortunately for one South Oldham High student the AED was in place when it was needed to save his life. Dawn McNew of Crestwood will never forget the fear she felt on Sept. 15, 2009 when her then 14-year-old son Sean went into cardiac arrest after doing pushups at South Oldham High School. Sean survived and was diagnosed with yet another type of electrical heart problem. He had to have a tiny defibrillator implanted. Sean's parents believe he got a second chance because the school had an AED - automatic external defibrillator. The AED gives an electrical shock to the heart to restore the patient’s heart rhythm. According to children's health advocacy group Parent Heart Watch, 70 percent of all sudden cardiac arrest victims are saved when a defibrillator is used immediately. Go to http://www.whas11.com/home/WHAS11s-Claudia-Coffey-explores-undiagnosed-heart-conditions-shares-personal-story-121352954.html and read Claudia Coffey's article about her own personal experience with AEDs. Hopefully, schools will never need to use an AED but as you can see when they are available they can save a child's life. So for this reason our club has started a new project to acquire and install additional AEDs in our South Oldham area schools. With the help of VisionWorks LLC we are currently planning a festival in Crestwood for Sept 9th and 10th on the the Maples property on Hwy 22 just west of Dairy Queen. We are going to use money made at our Crestwood Festival to purchase additional AEDs for these schools. Help us reach our goal by supporting our Crestwood Festival!
